Overview

About Your Course

This is an advanced studio-based course aimed at students who want to pursue a design specialism within architecture, who may not have RIBA Part I, or may not require RIBA Part II. It is also suitable if you have a good degree in Architecture or equivalent and are more interested in specialisation or an academic career than in general practice.

The course uses a research by design methodology within a supportive studio environment to allow you to develop your own specialism and research-based propositions. In particular, the course takes an international perspective on design and aims to develop exciting design-led propositions on issues such as environmental sustainability, urban resilience and resource depletion.

The three themes of the course are sustainable urbanism, facade design and architectural interiors which link directly with the core specialisms of the teaching staff. You will complete introductory and advanced projects in one of the three themes and at the end of your course you will have the opportunity to exhibit or publish your thesis work.

The Leeds School of Architecture, Landscape and Design at Leeds Metropolitan is well recognised within the three specialist areas. We have world renowned practitioners and academics in sustainable urbanism who have won international design competitions and have worked with and for leading design firms, such as Bauman Lyons Architects and MacCreanor Lavington. The facade design tutorial team have worked on innovative designs for firms such as Foster, Atelier One, HOK, Ian Simpson, and Zaha Hadid. The architectural interiors team consists of practitioners, academics and designers, who specialise in themes such as building reuse and museum and exhibition design. Many of the students undertake live projects or competitions.

You will have access to an excellent learning environment which includes new multimedia studios equipped with drawing boards, computers and model-making facilities, a state-of-the-art library and specialist workshops.

Modules

Core modules include:

Contextual studies 1

This module concerns itself with the core issues of the design, namely urbanism, sustainability and resource depletion and consists of a series of student-led discussions and presentations around a course reader. This links directly to the development of your personal research proposition in Studio 1.

Contextual studies 2

This is a research-based module that supports the creative work within Studio 2 and usually takes the form of a literature and design survey. It is a written piece that discusses the key issues unearthed by your studio work.

Studio 1

This module helps you develop your key specialism for the other modules. You will choose a specialism based on the themes mentioned above and develop a research proposition.

Studio 2

This studio is where you will initially develop your thesis work in design, which is continued and presented in the final studio module (Studio 3).

Studio 3

This is the final studio unit, where findings from the course are expanded into sophisticated theses or designs that test the key propositions developed in earlier modules. The course ends with an exhibition piece that communicates your thesis to a chosen audience.

Your Future

Future Career

On successful completion you can transfer onto the RIBA professionally accredited Master of Architecture (MArch). Graduates are highly sought after by practitioners and many find rewarding work in private design consultancies, local government agencies and environmental organisations in the UK and overseas. The course receives notification of vacancies in practices and we can put you in touch with these.

The course also offers a good foundation for those wanting to become academic researchers in Architecture and at Leeds Metropolitan there are options for further work towards a PhD.

The fee shown here is the 'gross' fee for new students starting in the 2012/13 academic year, before the application of any scholarship or discount. A scholarship of £1,500 is available to new full-time students studying an MA, MSC or MBA (180 credits) who are eligible to pay Home/EU fees. For students studying for an award such as a Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits), Postgraduate Certificate (60 credits), or part-time, a pro rata scholarship is available. The total cost of a Part-time course is determined by the number of modules you take in an academic year. Modules are made up of credit-points, and Part-time fees are typically quoted as fee-per-credit-point.

To calculate the typical cost of study: Fee-per-credit-point (e.g £33.33) x credit-points per module (e.g20) = module cost of £666.6. If you study 4 modules in a year the cost would be £2666.4 for that year.
