About Your Course
This course is for international students with IELTS 5.5 who would like to improve their Academic English and study skills before studying a masters or PhD at a British university.

Students can take the modules of this programme as part of our new International Masters programme.

The skills you develop will help you to be more successful on your chosen postgraduate programme and be more aware of the expectations and requirements of studying at that level in the UK. You will normally also study one module with British students in the faculty of your chosen masters or PhD.

On successful completion, you will gain a recognised university qualification, a Graduate Diploma in English Language and Education Studies (120 credits).

In the recent British Council inspection of our English Language Teaching provision in the School of Languages we are pleased to announce that we gained 8 points of excellence. This is an outstanding achievement and places us in the top 10% of British Council accredited Language Schools in the UK. In Semester A you will study:
Language Development
You will develop your general reading, writing, listening and speaking skills in preparation for the English for Academic Purposes module in semester B.

Integrated Research Skills
This module provides you with basic research skills in preparation for the Study and Research Skills module in semester B.

Successful Learning
You will develop your learning strategies and your understanding of university education in the UK in preparation for the UK Higher Education Context and Culture module in semester B.

British Life & Culture
You will discuss key areas of British institutions and culture. This semester A module will also develop your ability to understand lectures and participate in seminars.

In Semester B you will study:
English for Academic Purposes
You will develop your academic reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. This semester B module will build upon the skills developed in the Language Development module in semester A.

Study & Research Skills
You will gain research skills and a working understanding of research methods required at masters level. This semester B module is linked to the semester A Integrated Research Skills module.

UK Higher Education Culture & Context
This module enables you to adapt quickly to the study environment at a UK university. It builds upon the skills developed in the Successful Learning module in semester A.

Subject Context
You will study a subject related to your postgraduate course, normally with British students. Practice for this semester B module is given in the British Life & Culture module in semester A.

Programme Specification
Assessment
The assessments include a mix of coursework (including a project, essay and portfolio) and tests in reading, writing, listening and speaking.
Teaching & Learning
Learning will take place through lectures, seminars, small group and individual tutorials, as well as independent learning. You will also be given access to online self-study resources. You will have a personal tutor who you will meet regularly.

Length of Study:
Students with IELTS 5.5 (with no skill below 5.5) and an HND will study two semesters of English
Students with IELTS 5.5 (with no skill below 5.5) and an honours degree will study the Fast Track one semester of English

Classes: Minimum 15 hours per week plus an approximately equal amount of self study. For some modules you will be required to buy a course book. Course book prices vary between approximately £18 and £25.

Class size: Maximum 20 students, except in the British Life and Culture lectures and some Subject Context classes in other faculties.
Your Future
Future Career
On successful completion of the course you will have the knowledge, study and English Language skills to start your masters or PhD course. Language and other abilities developed on this course, such as communication, presentation and organisational skills, can also be transferred to the world of work.

Students intending to progress to specific postgraduate courses should apply for these when submitting their application for this course. Only students holding a conditional offer for their postgraduate course will have guaranteed progression.

Students can take the modules of this programme as part of the new International Masters programme.

English Language Requirement (IELTS):The English requirement for this course is IELTS 6.0 with no skills below 5.5 or equivalent.All candidates must have a good command of written and spoken English. Applicants whose first language is not English, with certificated qualifications, professional qualifications and/or appropriate work experiences will be considered. Applicants may be required to undertake additional English language courses. The University provides excellent support for such students.

UK & EU Fees Entry 2012

The fee shown here is the 'gross' fee for new students starting in the 2012/13 academic year, before the application of any scholarship or discount. A scholarship of £1,500 is available to new full-time students studying an MA, MSC or MBA (180 credits) who are eligible to pay Home/EU fees. For students studying for an award such as a Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits), Postgraduate Certificate (60 credits), or part-time, a pro rata scholarship is available. The table below provides further details:

A scholarship of £1,500 is offered to all new full-time overseas fee paying students joining the first year of a course in 2012-13. Only students paying the full 2012-13 overseas fee are eligible for this scholarship.
