GRADUATE DIPLOMA ENGLISH LANGUAGE & EDUCATION STUDIES (PRE-MASTERS)
Students can take the modules of this programme as part of our new International Masters programme.
The skills you develop will help you to be more successful on your chosen postgraduate programme and be more aware of the expectations and requirements of studying at that level in the UK. You will normally also study one module with British students in the faculty of your chosen masters or PhD.
On successful completion, you will gain a recognised university qualification, a Graduate Diploma in English Language and Education Studies (120 credits).
In the recent British Council inspection of our English Language Teaching provision in the School of Languages we are pleased to announce that we gained 8 points of excellence. You will develop your general reading, writing, listening and speaking skills in preparation for the English for Academic Purposes module in semester B.
Integrated Research Skills
This module provides you with basic research skills in preparation for the Study and Research Skills module in semester B.
Successful Learning
You will develop your learning strategies and your understanding of university education in the UK in preparation for the UK Higher Education Context and Culture module in semester B.
British Life & Culture
You will discuss key areas of British institutions and culture. This semester A module will also develop your ability to understand lectures and participate in seminars.
You will develop your academic reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. This semester B module will build upon the skills developed in the Language Development module in semester A.
Study & Research Skills
You will gain research skills and a working understanding of research methods required at masters level. This semester B module is linked to the semester A Integrated Research Skills module.
UK Higher Education Culture & Context
This module enables you to adapt quickly to the study environment at a UK university. It builds upon the skills developed in the Successful Learning module in semester A.
Subject Context
You will study a subject related to your postgraduate course, normally with British students. Practice for this semester B module is given in the British Life & Culture module in semester A.
Length of Study:
Students with IELTS 5.5 (with no skill below 5.5) and an HND will study two semesters of English
Students with IELTS 5.5 (with no skill below 5.5) and an honours degree will study the Fast Track one semester of English
Classes: Minimum 15 hours per week plus an approximately equal amount of self study. For some modules you will be required to buy a course book. Course book prices vary between approximately £18 and £25.
Class size: Maximum 20 students, except in the British Life and Culture lectures and some Subject Context classes in other faculties.
Students intending to progress to specific postgraduate courses should apply for these when submitting their application for this course. Only students holding a conditional offer for their postgraduate course will have guaranteed progression.

The fee shown here is the 'gross' fee for new students starting in the 2012/13 academic year, before the application of any scholarship or discount. A scholarship of £1,500 is available to new full-time students studying an MA, MSC or MBA (180 credits) who are eligible to pay Home/EU fees. For students studying for an award such as a Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits), Postgraduate Certificate (60 credits), or part-time, a pro rata scholarship is available. The table below provides further details:

A scholarship of £1,500 is offered to all new full-time overseas fee paying students joining the first year of a course in 2012-13. The international scholarship is awarded in the first year of study only. Please note that students joining a programme part way through or joining a dedicated top-up course are not eligible for this scholarship. Only students paying the full 2012-13 overseas fee are eligible for this scholarship.

Higher fees apply for ELQ students. You may be an ELQ student if you already have a BA/BSc and want to enrol on another
Bachelors level course; if you already have an MA/MSc and want to enrol on a Bachelors level course OR if you already
have an MA/MSc and want to enrol on another taught Masters level course.
