Overview
About Your Course
The Filmmakers' MA is a unique 18 month course that mirrors real international, independent film production. The course is about practical filmmaking, collaboration, creativity, project development and the business of film. We understand the filmmaker as the auteur and place this creative role at the heart of the filmmaking process.

On the course there is a lot of filmmaking and some theory too - we like our students to think, research, discuss and watch a lot films. We encourage radical, truly independent `stories' and ideas. We also give financing to your filmed Masters Project.

We accept students in head of department roles: Creative Producers, Screenwriters, Directors, Cinematographers, Production Designers, Sound Recordists/Designers, Editors and Screen Performers to make narrative film, documentary and experimental film - and if you have another way of doing it, we?ll look at that too.
Benefits of studying this course
Methods of film financing, production and distribution are moving away from old models and this course prepares you for an industry that expects you to be self reliant and self-employed.

The Northern Film School at Leeds Metropolitan is based at Electric Press in the city centre where you will have access to an impressive range of facilities. These include both 16mm and digital production equipment; two production studios, professional level edit suites, production offices, screening facilities, a props store and film and script archive.

You will be taught by practising filmmakers with a lot of independent film production experience between them. As a consequence of relationships between staff and the industry the standard of visiting practising filmmakers is very high. The Northern Film School is also a member of CILECT, an organisation of only the best film schools worldwide.

Modules
Modules
Core modules include:
1. Collaborative Creative Practice 1
You can 'author' up to three film exercises (or filmic sketches) with the help of your fellow students and Screen Performers. The idea is to get the collaborative filmmaking juices flowing and to explore inspirations and ideas. You will also attend talks with industry professionals and specialist tutors.
2. Contextual Studies
You will develop theoretical and contextual ideas around a film and discuss those ideas with your peers. Working within your specialist group you will prepare a presentation, select screening material and host a guided symposium to staff and students. Each student will submit a written piece that develops ideas born out of the symposium, backed by referencing of relevant texts, other films and authors.
3. Collaborative Creative Practice 2
In your creative specialism you will work collaboratively with other students to make a short film. In the first few weeks of the second semester writers, directors and producers develop the scripts, with other heads of department being attached soon after. You will be encouraged to relate the short film to your Masters Project in some way.
4. Cultural Praxis
This module applies your understanding of contextual and cultural theory to your filmmaking as you research and develop your film projects. You will work independently and make a learning agreement with your specialist tutor.
5. Masters Project Development
Development of your Masters Project begins. The idea for the film is born, written and planned, and research in each creative skill begins. You will attend workshops by visiting filmmakers and specialist tutors in your area of creative expertise.
6. Masters Project 1
You will make your masters film in your head of department role, with a pre-determined budget. Screen Writers will write two to three drafts of a feature (or TV) script and Screen Performers agree their Masters Project in consultation with Course Leaders - the possibilities are exciting, and limitless.
7. Walk Away Project
Development and preparation of a film or television project and/or show reel to take with you when you leave the course. This module provides a launching pad for your future life as a filmmaker.
8. Critical Practice
You will be provided with the tools to develop and apply your understanding of cultural theory and knowledge to your own practice as filmmakers.
Please note this list is not exhaustive and modules may change from time to time.
