About Your Course
Your course will be taught by nationally and internationally recognised artists and practitioners - and we encourage you to push the limits of your creativity and experiment with performance, installation, photography, drawing, printmaking, animation, digital processes and many other media.

Our aim is to develop your individual artistic identity - whether this is through painting, sculpture, text, film, performance, print, sound or other media - while you will also participate in seminars, collaborative on and off-site activities and live curatorial projects.

We're committed to encouraging critical thinking, enabling you to understand your own work and that of others within a range of historical, philosophical and cultural areas.

Level 4
Core modules include:
Introduction to Fine Art Practice
The first semester long Practice module establishes fine art practice as an area of activity and introduces numerous strategies and approaches for you to identify your individual artistic concerns and initiate your own creative practice. This introductory module familiarizes you to the course, its philosophy and staff, the resources of the School and University. It. The module is initially delivered through a series of introductory workshops, presentations / seminars and projects as group orientated activities to facilitate the initiation of your own individual practice. Following the introductory group teaching strategies you will be supported by more individually focused tutorials concerned with the development of your own practice. You will receive verbal and written feedback through the module with a formal feedback assessment and grade at the close of the module.
Fine Art Practice
The second semester long practice module is centered on you continuing to develop and refine your studies through a process of review, evaluation and critical reflection on your own and others work. In combination with further media explorations you will gain a greater insight into your work and intentions, producing a personal statement to identify and contextualise your practice. The module is delivered through individual and group tutorials, presentations and exhibition opportunities both inside and outside of the University. You will receive verbal and written feedback through the module with a formal feedback assessment and grade at both a mid point and at the close of the module.
Historical & Critical Studies
This module introduces you to key concepts and periods of visual art of the last 150 years as critical dialogues with which to view your own and others work. In this way the module supports your developing practice through placing your ideas in the context of a wider culture. The module is delivered through lectures, student presentations/seminars, individual tutorials, an essay and an exhibition review submission. There is a mid year assessment and an end of year synoptic assessment for the module for which written feedback is provided.
Level 5
Fine Art Studio Practice
The module develops your notion of self-directed study and independent learning supported by tutorial, group tutorial and group presentation critique. The confidence gained in Level 1 is built on in the module through an explorative and speculative approach to media in a developing independent practice. This module is sequentially built upon with subsequent module FA5.2 within the level.
Fine Art Studio Practice 2
The module further develops and consolidates your self-directed study and independent learning supported by tutorial and group critique opportunities from the previous module (FA5.1). The confidence and competencies gained in the previous module are built upon through a self-initiated and directed investigative and applied approach to evidence their intentions ambitions and contexts for their independent practice.
Historical & Critical Studies 2
The module develops your awareness of issues in the history, theory and criticism of modern and contemporary fine art over the two semesters of the level. There is an emphasis on a critical examination of contemporary art practice. Concepts of postmodernism and postmodernity are further developed. The range, quality and differing purposes of artists? writings are examined
Level 6
Fine Art Studio Practice 3
The module further develops and begins to realise your self-directed study and independent learning, supported by tutorial, group tutorial and group presentation opportunities. The confidence gained through Level 5 is built upon in this module through a self-initiated and directed investigative approach to evidence their intentions, ambitions and contexts for their independent practice. This module leads to the synthesis of Studio Practice and Historical and Critical Studies. The module is sequentially built upon with the subsequent module FA6.2 within the level.
Realising Fine Art Practice
The module consolidates and realises your self-directed study and independent learning supported by tutorial, group tutorial and group presentation opportunities. The confidence and competences gained in the previous modules are built upon through a self-sustained and directed, investigative and applied approach to evidence your intentions, ambitions and contexts for tyour independent practice through the production of a final exhibition of work with a supporting `artists? written statement.
Realising Historical & Critical Studies
The module realizes your awareness of issues in the history; theory and criticism of modern and contemporary fine art through research and writing required by a sustained study of some aspect of contemporary fine art issues of particular relevance to you.

Opportunities
As well being given the opportunity to exhibit each year, you will be encouraged to take a proactive approach, collaborate with others and make your own opportunities - just as you will in the real world. Leeds has a thriving visual arts scene and our students have formed their own collectives, participating in the annual Light Night event and even setting up their own galleries. Final year students will also have the opportunity to exhibit their work at our annual Creative Arts Festival, which is attended by arts professionals from across the country.

The course also has a Visiting Lecturer Programme for you to engage with professional practicing artists and gain a valuable insight into how creative individuasl operate in a world beyond the university. Each week an artist is invited to give a lecture to students about their work and students are encouraged to meet with the artist on an individual basis to discuss their work after the lecture. This opportunity will help inform your ideas and the evolution of your own pratice.
Future Career
As a proactive, creative thinker you will be equipped to make opportunities for yourself, manage your own career and the promotion of yourself and your work. Our graduates have gone on to pursue their careers in the arts working in galleries and museums, as journalists, designers, in arts administration and in the film industry. You may also wish to further your study with one of our postgraduate courses, as many of our students have become a Lecturer or School Teacher.

You will study in the studios and workshops of the award-winning Broadcasting Place at Leeds Metropolitan University, equipped with everything from the latest Macs and software to letterpress and printmaking workshops, photographic darkrooms, a digital print unit, animation workspaces and 3D construction facilities. You will have access to a range of cameras, lighting, video and sound recording equipment.

Fee Information
Our University's Board of Governors has agreed to set fees at £8,500 for full-time undergraduates starting in 2012.

There are no upfront fees for students. You will only start repaying tuition fees after you have graduated and once you are earning £21,000 or more. We also know that the repayments will be fixed at 9% of salary above £21,000. Therefore for someone earning £30,000 after graduation the repayment would be £67.50 per month.

The total cost of a Part-time course is determined by the number of modules you take in an academic year. Modules are made up of credit-points, and Part-time fees are typically quoted as fee-per-credit-point.

To calculate the typical cost of study: Fee-per-credit-point (e.g £70.83) x credit-points per module (e.g20) = module cost of £1416.6. If you study 4 modules in a year the cost would be £5666.4 for that year.
