CERTHE INTERNATIONAL FOUNDATION STUDIES
This course consists of four main areas - English language, study and academic skills, cultural awareness and, for some students, a specialist subject related to their chosen undergraduate degree.
The skills you learn and develop through this course will help you to be more successful on your chosen undergraduate programme. You will also become aware of the expectations and requirements of studying in the UK.
Your English language, academic research and study skills will improve through projects, essays and practical exercises. Your understanding of British culture and the way of learning at British universities will develop through lectures and seminars.
Some elements may be studied with British students; others will be in a group of international students. Successful completion of this course will enable you to be eligible for guaranteed entry to a selection of our undergraduate courses here at Leeds Metropolitan University.
In the recent British Council inspection of our English Language Teaching provision in the School of Languages we are pleased to announce that we gained 8 points of excellence. This is an outstanding achievement and places us in the top 10% of British Council accredited Language Schools in the UK. International Foundation Studies 2011/12 Guaranteed Entry for 2012/2013
Length of Study: 2 semesters
Classes: Minimum 15 hours per week plus an approximately equal amount of self study. For some modules you will be required to buy a course book. Course book prices vary between approximately £18 and £25.
Class size: maximum 20 students, except in the Living in Britain lectures and some Subject Module classes in other faculties.
Minimum age upon entry: 17
You will also have the opportunity to attend and take part in a conference where you can meet international foundation students from other Universities in the UK. Whilst at Leeds Metropolitan, you will be able to volunteer for a range of opportunities, both here and abroad.
Students not wishing to progress onto an undergraduate degree can take the Certificate International Foundation Studies. This programme is for students who wish to study in the UK for one semester to enhance their CV and gain a British university qualification.
We welcome applications from those studying the Advanced Diploma qualifications and will consider them as an entry requirement for our undergraduate courses. Fee Information
Our University's Board of Governors has agreed to set fees at £8,500 for full-time undergraduates starting in 2012.
There are no upfront fees for students. You will only start repaying tuition fees after you have graduated and once you are earning £21,000 or more. We also know that the repayments will be fixed at 9% of salary above £21,000. Therefore for someone earning £30,000 after graduation the repayment would be £67.50 per month.

National Scholarship Programme
If your household income is less than £25,000 a year you may be able to find help through the new £150m National
Scholarship Programme. This is a scheme that is being introduced to help people from low income families wanting
to go to university in 2012. The government has set national eligibility criteria based on household income, and
each university has designed its own scholarship scheme with extra criteria.

A scholarship of £1,500 is offered to all new full-time overseas fee paying students joining the first year of a course in 2012-13. The international scholarship is awarded in the first year of study only. Please note that students joining a programme part way through or joining a dedicated top-up course are not eligible for this scholarship. Only students paying the full 2012-13 overseas fee are eligible for this scholarship.
Equivalent or Lower Qualification (ELQ) Students
Higher fees apply for ELQ students. You may be an ELQ student if you already have a BA/BSc and want to enrol on another
Bachelors level course; if you already have an MA/MSc and want to enrol on a Bachelors level course OR if you already
have an MA/MSc and want to enrol on another taught Masters level course.
If you think you may be categorised as studying for an ELQ, you are advised to contact our Admissions Office.
Leeds Metropolitan Bursary
Our Leeds Metropolitan Bursary is open to all full-time undergraduate students who pay annual
tuition fees in full and receive the full Higher Education Maintenance Grant.
Bursaries currently stand at £500 for the first year of study, £800 for the second and £1,000
for the third and subsequent years of study. They are paid in full in February each year.

If you meet the criteria your bursary will be paid automatically, however you must remember to
consent to share your information with us when you make your application.
