About Your Course
This unique combined academic English and masters course offers an accelerated route for international students with an HND, or equivalent, in a subject related to their chosen masters degree. It is ideal if your English level is IELTS 5.5 with no skill below 5.5, or equivalent.
The first part of this course will build your confidence and help you gain the knowledge and English language skills required to progress onto your masters, where you will acquire expertise in your chosen subject area.
You will be given one unconditional offer to study two semesters of Academic English at our beautiful Headingley Campus followed by your chosen masters course. You will not normally need to renew your visa at any stage.
If you have a qualification equivalent to a UK undergraduate degree and IELTS 5.5 you can gain advanced entry on to the second semester of the academic English course.

The International Masters gives you one unconditional offer for a combined English and masters programme, even though you do not yet have a high enough English level to begin your masters. This means you do not need to renew your visa after successfully completing your English course. In year 1 you will gain 120 credits at final year undergraduate level.
The English modules, together with all the university preparation courses offered by Leeds Metropolitan, are accredited by the British Council and are taught by highly qualified and experience teachers.

Year 1 - Language Development
You will develop your general reading, writing, listening and speaking skills in preparation for the English for Academic Purposes module in semester B.
Year 1 - Integrated Research Skills
This module provides you with basic research skills in preparation for the Study & Research Skills module in semester B.
Year 1 - Successful Learning
You will develop your learning strategies and your understanding of university education in the UK in preparation for the UK Higher Education Context & Culture module in semester B.
Year 1 - British Life & Culture
You will discuss key areas of British institutions and culture. This semester A module will also develop your ability to understand lectures and participate in seminars. This will prepare you for the Subject Context module in semester B.Other modules linked to this course may include:

Year 2 - After successful completion of the Academic English modules you will progress onto year 2 of the International Masters which will be your chosen masters. See your masters course description for module information.

Programme Specification
Assessment
In the first two Academic English semesters, the assessments will include a mix of coursework and tests in reading, writing, speaking and listening. Your masters assessments will depend upon your chosen course.
Teaching & Learning
Learning will take place through lectures, seminars, small group and individual tutorials, as well as independent learning. You will also be given access to online self-study resources. You will have a personal tutor who you will meet regularly.
Length of Study:
Students with IELTS 5.5 (with no skill below 5.5) and an HND will study two semesters of English followed by one year of masters (full-time);
Students with IELTS 5.5 (with no skill below 5.5) and an honours degree will study one semester of English followed by one year of masters (full-time).
Classes: Minimum 15 hours per week of Academic English in Year 1 plus an approximately equal amount of self study. Subsequent delivery hours will depend upon the masters chosen. For some modules you will be required to buy a course book. Course book prices vary between approximately £18 and £25.
Class size: maximum 20 students in Year 1, except in the British Life and Culture lectures and some Subject Context classes in other faculties. Subsequent class sizes will depend upon the masters chosen.

The fee will be fixed at this level for each year of your course.
A scholarship of £1,500 is offered to all new full-time overseas fee paying students joining the first year of a course in 2012-13. The international scholarship is awarded in the first year of study only. Please note that students joining a programme part way through or joining a dedicated top-up course are not eligible for this scholarship. Only students paying the full 2012-13 overseas fee are eligible for this scholarship.
