It is delivered entirely online through the International School of Linguists, a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). It is aimed at all freelance or practising interpreters or linguists with the specified competence in at least two languages (one of them English) who want to develop their professional skills as Public Service Interpreters.
Success in this course will enable you to progress to the Professional Diploma in Public Service Interpreting and the Masters level Advanced Professional Diploma in Public Service Interpreting.
Benefits of studying this course
Most interpreting courses include language training or development so are restricted to people speaking specific language combinations. This Vocational Diploma in Interpreting is not language specific so can be taken by anyone with the specified competence in English and any other language(s). The course does not aim to improve your language skills directly but to develop an understanding of the underlying skills necessary to the role of a Public Service interpreter so you can undertake a wide range of interpreting assignments.
As the course is delivered online and you do not need to attend classes at the university, it is very flexible and available to linguists wherever you live. You will be allocated a personal tutor who will advise you by email or phone on how to work through the course and be successful.
As a student of Leeds Metropolitan University you will get a student card and access to a wide range of resources and services available to all our students.
This course also allows you to access SCICrec, the European Directorate General for Interpreting's innovative interpreting software.
Further information about this course can be found on the PSI related web page
All assessments will be done online. During the course you will have opportunities to practise all these exercises and get feedback, guidance and help from your personal tutor.
Attainment of this Diploma will reinforce your applications for work with language service providers, charity and council interpreting schemes and other public service interpreting bodies.
