About Your Course
The Introduction to Academic English course is for international students who want to study the CertHE International Foundation Studies. Students who pass the course sometimes go directly onto other Leeds Metropolitan University courses if they meet the entry criteria.

You will develop your English reading, writing, speaking and listening skills, and we will help you improve your academic English too. You will also have a personal tutor who will meet you regularly.

Depending upon your English language level and other needs, you will normally take the Introduction to Academic English for 10 or 20 weeks. Students typically progress about half an IELTS point in each 10-week block.

Successful completion of this course will guarantee you a place on the CertHE International Foundation Studies (September start). Successful completion of the CertHE International Foundation Studies course guarantees you entry to the majority of undergraduate courses offered at Leeds Metropolitan University.

We also offer a Graduate Diploma for students wishing to take a postgraduate programme.

Programme Specification
Assessment
The assessments include a mix of coursework and tests in reading, writing, speaking and listening.
Teaching & Learning
You will have lectures, seminars, small group and individual tutorials and we will give you support with independent learning. You will have a personal tutor who you will meet regularly.

Length of Study: 10-week blocks

Classes: 20 hours per week plus self study. For some modules you will be required to buy a course book. Course book prices vary between approximately £18 and £25.

Fees & Funding
UK & EU Fees Entry 2012

Fee Information
Our University's Board of Governors has agreed to set fees at £8,500 for full-time undergraduates starting in 2012.

There are no upfront fees for students. You will only start repaying tuition fees after you have graduated and once you are earning £21,000 or more. We also know that the repayments will be fixed at 9% of salary above £21,000. Therefore for someone earning £30,000 after graduation the repayment would be £67.50 per month.

National Scholarship Programme
If your household income is less than £25,000 a year you may be able to find help through the new £150m National Scholarship Programme. This is a scheme that is being introduced to help people from low income families wanting to go to university in 2012. The government has set national eligibility criteria based on household income, and each university has designed its own scholarship scheme with extra criteria.

Equivalent or Lower Qualification (ELQ) Students
Higher fees apply for ELQ students. You may be an ELQ student if you already have a BA/BSc and want to enrol on another Bachelors level course; if you already have an MA/MSc and want to enrol on a Bachelors level course OR if you already have an MA/MSc and want to enrol on another taught Masters level course.
