About Your Course
Landscape architecture is a creative profession which combines art, science, design and the environment in order to improve the quality of peoples' lives. On this course your creativity will be developed through exciting design-based projects, taught by an academic team with a wide range of professional expertise. You will explore landscapes and learn how to design in response to associated issues including natural processes, historical approaches, planning and urban design, and the human response to these environments. This course is accredited by the Landscape Institute.

Core modules include:
Design Exploration
This module aims to introduce you to design processes and the basic design elements such as; colour, line, form and texture. By exploring these concepts and building on knowledge and skills gained in ED101, you will create a 3D solution in response to a brief.
Introduction to Landscape and Garden Design
This module aims to introduce you to the characteristics which give outdoor spaces their unique character. A basic understanding is gained through recording diverse landscapes through graphic techniques and photography. You will work individually and in groups and begin to develop the study skills necessary for higher education.
Level 5
20th Century Landscape and Garden Design
This module helps you to identify and understand the significance of major developments in the designed environment from C1900 to the present. Aspects of art and design and architecture as well as garden and landscape design are embraced.
Art, Plants and the Environment
This module provides an introduction to, and investigation of, the philosophy and practice of art in the landscape and the study of landscape and garden design as forms of art.
Design with Plants
This module will develop further your knowledge of soft materials and explore in detail the specification and implementation of plants and planting for a site.

Elective 1
This module provides an opportunity to negotiate learning activities appropriate to your individual student needs, interests and course level learning outcomes, through a personal development plan.
Landscape Character Assessment and GIS
This module introduces you to the principles and practice of landscape character assessment and its significance for landscape design through lectures, tutorials and a field study. You are introduced to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) through a study guide and exercise on a PC, followed by application of GIS to the field study site.
Rural Landscape Planning and Design
This is a design module that focuses on understanding and master-planning a sensitive, multi-functional rural landscape, and the detailed resolution of a selected part of that master plan.
Urban Landscapes: Neighbourhood Analysis and Concepts
This module focuses on the theory and practice of urban design and urban landscapes, contemporary `place' theory and the critical analysis of a neighbourhood.
Urban Landscapes: Public Space Design
This is a design module that concentrates on the detailed understanding and subsequent resolution of a small, public, urban open-space.
Level 6
Construction and Specification
This module provides the opportunity for you to demonstrate competence in detailed design resolution and specification, including landscape engineering and construction detailing, where possible, through a practical site-based project.

Elective 2
An opportunity to negotiate learning activities appropriate to individual student needs, interests and course level learning outcomes, through a personal development plan.
Landscape Critical and Contextual Studies
This module explores critical and contextual trends and issues relevant to landscape architecture from an international perspective. It also provides an opportunity to develop further research skills. Presentation enables practice in use of written report communication.
Landscape Design and Community
The principles and practice of landscape design, construction and management whilst working on community based projects, including the engagement of site users in the planning process.
Specialist Landscape Architecture Design Project
In this double module, you can select from a choice of themes to undertake a comprehensive landscape architecture design project. Each project provides an opportunity for creativity and personal focus, starting from a brief, designing at a range of scales, to achieve a resolved site design.
History & Theory of Landscape & Garden Design
An introduction to the history and theory of landscape and garden design. This project-based module is primarily concerned with the study, interpretation and communication of the philosophy and practice of landscape and garden design from its origins to the twentieth century.
Natural Processes
A study of the components and processes of the natural landscape through use of a study guide, workshops, research into secondary sources and a field survey.

Urban Public Gardens
This is a double module which takes you through the full design process from survey and analysis through concept development, site design and resolution. The project is based on small-scale urban public gardens and allows you to explore a variety of graphic communication techniques in both 2D and 3D.

Opportunities
You will have access to our new multi-media studios equipped with drawing boards, computers and model-making facilities, a state-of-the-art library, and IT suites. Our own landscape resource centre and Experimental Gardens provide opportunities for hands-on practical experience. Your studies are further enriched by visits from design professionals together with field trips to landscape projects in the UK and Europe. Our students regularly win design competitions and work on live projects such as our award winning Design in the Community Project.
Future Career
The majority of our graduates take a year out in professional practice before returning to Leeds Metropolitan to continue onto the Postgraduate Diploma in Landscape Architecture. Others use the course as a basis for a career in landscape conservation, garden design, urban design and environmental management. This course also sees graduates go on to start their own businesses. You may find rewarding work in private design consultancies, local government agencies and environmental organisations in the UK and overseas.

Fee Information
Our University's Board of Governors has agreed to set fees at £8,500 for full-time undergraduates starting in 2012.

There are no upfront fees for students. You will only start repaying tuition fees after you have graduated and once you are earning £21,000 or more. We also know that the repayments will be fixed at 9% of salary above £21,000. Therefore for someone earning £30,000 after graduation the repayment would be £67.50 per month.
