About Your Course
Issues concerning the design of the urban environment are often overlooked - this course has been created to fill that gap. Urban design is a growing profession and we will help you to develop your creativity and knowledge in this area.

Our course is actively involved with urban design initiatives in the region, assisting local communities and urban design practitioners in live projects and competitions. If you already plan, design and manage urban environments, we will improve your analytical and creative skills.

This is a flexible design-based course which gives you the opportunity to customise your learning according to your needs, interests and career aspirations. You will study the latest methods and design theories of urban environments, exploring the development and resolution of projects, and focus on achieving environmental sustainability.

We build your understanding of ecological, management, social and economic principles that contribute to environmental and sustainable development.

We also offer this course with a Postgraduate Certificate and Postgraduate Diploma options, while individual modules may be studied as continuing professional development (CPD).

January entrants please note: in order to complete 12 months of academic study delivered in University term time, the total length of your programme will be 18 months to include recognised University vacation periods.

The course has links with many areas in the industry, from Local Authority Planning Departments to Urban Design and Landscape Architecture Practices. It is suitable for architects, landscape architects, planners, highway engineers, public artists, designers and professionals from other related areas.

A multi-disciplinary team of professionals with extensive practice-based experience teach the course, there are also sessions from visiting professionals.

You will benefit from our new multi-media studios equipped with drawing boards, computers and model making facilities, together with a state-of-the-art library.

Final Project (40 Credits)
This is an in-depth study of a chosen urban design topic.
Negotiated Study (40 Credits)
Two modules are chosen to develop urban design knowledge and skills relevant to individual interests and needs.
Place Making Project - Design Challenges and Solutions (20 Credits)
You will explore design development and resolution of a complex urban design project.
Reflective Practice (20 Credits)
You will critically reflect upon your experience of urban design practice.
Research Methods, Theories and Practices (20 Credits)
Introduces a range of research methods for practice-based, empirical and theoretical research.
Site Analysis Project: Theories and Practices (20 Credits)
This module explores key urban design concepts and design based methods of site analysis.
Sustainable Communities (20 Credits)
This module explores a range of ecological, management and social/economic principles to achieve environmentally sustainable development.

Teaching & Learning
Urban Design is taught as a creative design course with an emphasis on project-based modules to achieve a close integration between theory and practice relevant to current and emerging workplace challenges.

Students are tutored by a multi-disciplinary team of professionals including urban designers, architects, landscape architects and planners with extensive practice-based experience, supported by visiting practitioners.

Projects are supported by the acquisition of knowledge and skills through lectures, specialist workshops, small group seminars and one-to-one tutorials together with UK and overseas study visits.

The studio provides a forum for tutor support and feedback as well as opportunities for creative dialogue with colleagues.

Over the last 15 years we have developed strong links with industry and you will benefit from these relationships. We have previously hosted events for the Urban Design Group, Royal Town Planning Institute and Landscape Institute.

You will be introduced to practitioners during the course, while we are also kept up to date with job vacancies, helping many of our graduates find careers in private design consultancies, local government agencies and environmental organisations in the UK and overseas.

In addition to this, we provide research opportunities working with academic staff.

UK & EU Fees Entry 2013/14

The tuition fee for the year for students entering in 2013/14 is £4500. The amount you will pay may increase each year to take into account the effects of inflation. See further information on financing your studies.
Part-time
Studying part-time gives you the flexibility to learn at your own pace. Because of this, our tuition fees are calculated using credit points. Each module you study has a credit point value. Most taught postgraduate modules have a credit point value of 20. The tuition fee for students entering in in 2013/14 on this course is £500 for each 20 credit point module. For modules with a different credit point value their cost can be calculated by multiplying the credit value of the module by the cost per credit point of £25. The amount you will pay may increase each year in line with inflation. See further information on financing your studies.

To calculate the typical cost of study: Fee-per-credit-point (e.g £33.33) x credit-points per module (e.g 20) = module cost of £666.60. If you study 4 modules in a year the cost would be £2,666.40 for that year.
