About Your Course
Equipped with a digital camera, a laptop and an internet link, a photographic journalist can now transmit dozens of high resolution images almost instantly to an editor's desktop from anywhere in the world. In an age where any member of the public can send mobile phone images from the scene of newsworthy events, competition is intense. This course is designed to equip you with the technical, ethical, intellectual, and health and safety tools you need to secure superior and striking images and gain a competitive edge.

Graphics & Design
This module aims to develop an appreciation for design and visual aesthetics and provide you with the appropriate terminology, technical skills and basic visual awareness to be successful in the creative technology related industries.
Introduction to Digital Journalism
The module aims to introduce you to the basic techniques required to publish photographic journalism to a wider audience. The module provides the opportunity to explore a wide range of publishing options. You will be introduced to the art of story telling for digital platforms and introduced to the workflow that links all stages of the publication process.
Introduction to Ethics & Photo Journalism Practice
This module aims to introduce you to the basic concepts of ethics, law, health and safety as applied to the practice of photographic journalism. It also introduces you to the skills necessary for personal learning and development, and effective communication with peers and tutors.
Photo Story
This module is concerned with the research and development of a photo story through a series of short photographic projects. You will incorporate the technical and practical skills developed on the other modules, whilst addressing the relevant ethical and legal issues.
Technology Context
This module encourages research into the key industrial developments, people and technological changes of their particular industry and also enhances both your analytical capabilities and presentation techniques pertaining to the production process.

Group Project Implementation & Evaluation (Double Module)
The Group Project enables you to further your professional skills by participating in the work of a group in the design and development of a solution to a real-life or case-study based problem. The groups are required to deliver a client-specified solution and a number of sub-deliverables concerned with both the solution and the group's development. The module encourages the adoption of professional working practices at an individual and team level and develops skills related to research and project management. Supervisory support assists you in fulfilling these aims. In addition, the module aims to prepare you for supervised work experience/employment by developing employability skills and an awareness of the ethical and legal issues pertinent to your area of study.
Professional Development in Context
You will develop the technical and interpersonal skills needed to undertake a vocationally relevant project and manage that project in a way that is demonstrably relevant to your award. In doing this, you will select and apply a range of investigative techniques appropriate to both your practice and project and thus be able to demonstrate an understanding of professional development in context.
Visual Communication
This module aims to extend your creative understanding of how conceptual ideas are developed, constructed and communicated within a production environment. It further aims to actively promote a skill base for you to create, adapt and contextualise conceptual ideas and deliver them within an appropriate visual framework.

Project Implementation & Evaluation (Double Module)
This module provides you with the opportunity to design, build and evaluate a significant product to a professional standard, ideally from a client-led brief. The multi disciplined nature of such products will normally require a team based approach, which will in turn require you to identify your individual contribution to the product and to integrate these to create the product.

Opportunities
On our course you will gain skills to manipulate digital images using Photoshop for journalistic and creative purposes. You will spend time collecting these images outside of the classroom individually or in groups, on real world projects. The course covers the current trend of public news gathering supported with an understanding of digital formats and delivery mechanisms. Through your assignments you will develop a comprehensive professional portfolio of digital imagery evidencing a range of technical and creative skills.
Future Career
This course prepares you for the capture, processing and publication of professional digital imagery, with a focus on the latest technical workflows and advanced manipulation of digital images. On graduation you can get a job in the publishing or newspaper industries as press/editorial photographers, picture researcher/editors and freelance/contract photographers. There are also opportunities in electronic news gathering, web publishing, advertising and marketing. Our local partners include the BBC Big Screen, Festival Republic, Students Union TV and the New Technology Institute media training facility.

Fee Information
Our University's Board of Governors has agreed to set fees at £8,500 for full-time undergraduates starting in 2012.

There are no upfront fees for students. You will only start repaying tuition fees after you have graduated and once you are earning £21,000 or more. We also know that the repayments will be fixed at 9% of salary above £21,000. Therefore for someone earning £30,000 after graduation the repayment would be £67.50 per month.

National Scholarship Programme
If your household income is less than £25,000 a year you may be able to find help through the new £150m National Scholarship Programme. This is a scheme that is being introduced to help people from low income families wanting to go to university in 2012.
