About Your Course
The travel and tourism industry is more aware than ever of the need to adopt responsible business practices that improve the quality of life within local communities and conserve the environment and cultures of destinations. Marketing, operations and product development practices are changing across the sector and organisations need managers who have the ability to implement responsible tourism strategies.

This course is taught by the International Centre for Responsible Tourism Management and draws from the Centre's work with industry, governments and communities worldwide.

The course explores domestic and international tourism - as responsible principles are as applicable to the Yorkshire Dales as they are to The Gambia. In addition to developing your subject knowledge, you will learn how to plan, implement and evaluate responsible tourism polices and practices. You will look at real issues and solutions and develop the management skills you need to operate effectively at a strategic level within government, non-governmental and private sectors.

Benefits of studying this course
The International Centre for Responsible Tourism (ICRT) is a postgraduate training and research centre. Teaching & Learning
This course is primarily delivered distance learning with some face-to-face teaching. The incorporation of distance learning is to enable you to continue working whilst undertaking the masters.

While most modules are delivered in a distance learning format, they do incorporate an optional weekend of traditional face-to-face contact. Although these teaching weekends are optional, we strongly recommend attending them if at all possible because of the obvious benefits you will receive.

For each distance learning module you will be sent an up-to-date manual of 150 to 200 pages which includes readings, tasks and links to further material.

Our alumni are our greatest asset. The international expertise of the staff will enhance your ability to operate effectively at a strategic level within governmental, non-governmental, conservation and private sectors of the international tourism industry, with specific responsibilities for introducing responsible tourism programmes.

Examples of the positions our alumni have gone on to undertake include sustainability managers and product managers for tour operators, sustainability advisors for national tourism organisations, working in consultancy (either as employees or freelance), employed in senior government positions and managerial positions in international non-governmental organisations, as well as journalism.

Once you graduate we stay in touch with you through newsletters, a World Travel Market social, personal contact, contracting you for consultancy if relevant and involving you in events and activities relevant to your experience and where you live. Our current students and alumni are also invited to join our ICRT Alumni Networking site which enables members to keep in touch around the world and share their interest in responsible tourism. The site provides an opportunity to share information on job opportunities, events, discussion topics, websites and news in responsible tourism, as well as keep up to date and support the activities of your fellow alumni.
